USA team squad

United States in the Group C with England, Algeria and Slovenia. America is facing England for the first time. The eastern Europeans are historically rivals of the US team. They have a 23 squad team who are very much optimistic for a huge success in the world cup 2010.

The team is like the following:

Goalkeepers
Tim Howard of Everton is the number one goalkeeper for the US. Brad Guzanis another one.

Defenders
This is the weakest side in the US team. AC Milan center back Oguchi Onyewu is finally back from a torn patellar tendon but the rust of missing seven months has shown in the US’ last two friendlies. There is also the problem at left back. US fans bemoan the fact that Bradley has confidence in Jonathan Bornstein. Somehow, the Chivas USA man continues to see time at that spot. Team captain Carlos Bocanegra had an injury-riddled year at Rennes and is not the fleetest of foot however there is still the chance that Bradley slots Bocanegra into that left back spot with Onyewu who will be along side Watford’s Jay DeMerit with West Ham United man Jonathan Spector or Hannover 96 player and veteran Steve Cherundolo at right back. Clarence Goodson is an able reserve and can come off the bench and provide danger on set pieces with his lean frame.

Midfielder
This is the strongest side of the team. The most recognizable player wearing a US jersey is Landon Donovan who plays as an attacking midfielder. Donovan will likely be joined in attack by Fulham’s Clint Dempsey who works well with the LA Galaxy player. Central midfielder and coach’s son Michael Bradley will assuredly be in the starting 11 however it remains to be seen who will be paired with the younger Bradley. Maurice Edu is one candidate who has plenty of experience playing in big matches with Rangers in Scotland. Edu is a tough defensive midfielder that can still get forward and score goals. Jose Torres was the best US player on the field in the friendly last week versus Turkey and could also receive a starting nod. Torres is a favorite of US fans for his poise and composure over the ball, a quality lacking in many US players. The possession midfielder may also be the best at free kicks for the US team. Another appealing option off the bench is three-time World Cuper DaMarcus Beasley who is speedy and has plenty of experience on the world’s largest stage.

Forwards
Last summer at the Confederations Cup, the revelation for the US squad was striker Charlie Davies whose quickness frustrated the Spanish team during the US’ upset 2-0 victory. However an auto accident in October injured Davies and ultimately the Sochuax player did not receive medical clearance from his club to participate this summer. So one of the big questions facing Bradley was who would be paired with Jozy Altidore up top? The candidates that emerged were three players all viewed as darkhorses at making the squad just months ago: Robbie Findley, Herculez Gomez and Edson Buddle. Out of the three, Findley has the most speed and showed well versus Turkey. Buddle has a good rapport with Donovan as both men play at the Galaxy while Gomez tied for the league lead in goals scored this past season at Mexico. Most likely versus England, Bradley will pair Altidore with Findley as speed and coverage appear to be the name of the game for the US team.

We may now hopefully wish—good luck USA.
